The first two weekends in August, the Sherman Community Players Board of Directors will be hosting a dinner theatre production of the Neil Simon comedy LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS as a benefit for the local theatre group. This is the seventh year for the event, which in the past, has played to sold-out houses.
The format is very much like the dinner theatres in the Dallas area, which were so popular several years ago. The event will be held in the Honey McGee Playhouse located directly behind the Finley Theatre, and seating will be limited to only 94 people. Candlelit tables of four on varying levels surrounding three sides of the performance area make for a very intimate dining and theatre-going experience. A salad course is served, and then the first act of the play is presented, followed by the main course. The second act is performed next, followed by dessert, and then the final act. An attentive wait staff serves the catered meal and complimenary wine is available.
Neil Simon has long been America?s most popular comedic playwright, and the Players have done several of his shows for the dinner theatre over the past few years. LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS takes place during the ?Swingin? Sixties? and tells the story of Barney Cashman, a seafood restaurant owner who, at the age of 57, decides to join the sexual revolution and have an illicit affair before it?s too late. However, Barney is a gentle, sober soul with a true-blue wife of 33 years and absolutely no experience in adultery. Quite naturally, he utterly and hilariously fails in each of his three forays into the unknown world of seduction!
Heading the cast in the title role is veteran funnyman FRANK STEELE as Barney Cashman. Steele is no stranger to a Neil Simon comedy having just recently played Oscar in SCP?s season opener THE ODD COUPLE. Playing his three attempts at adultery are local author and televison personality Amy Shojai, Cruthchfield Elementary teacher CHARLENE LYONS and Belden Street Montessori principal and SCP comedy favorite KAREN SCHUTH. All three actresses have extensive SCP performing credits. Managing director RON CASSADY is directing the production.
The dates for the show are Friday and Saturday evenings, August 1, 2, 8 and 9 and Sunday afternoons August 3 and 10. The doors open for evening shows at 6:30 p.m. and 12:30 for the matinees. Tickets are priced at $35 per person for the dinner and the play.
Reservations are a necessity, as there will be no tickets sold at the door. Tickets went on sale in June during the SCP production of THE MUSIC MAN, and according to SCP benefit member Darlene Schweizer, most performances are nearly full. Reservations can be made by calling Mrs. Schweizer at 903-893-7652. Visa and Master Card are accepted.
